Agri-Food, Environment and Rural Affairs
While agriculture remains the cornerstone of Northern Ireland’s rural economy, the Northern Ireland Government has always endorsed a multi-sectoral approach to rural development tackling the broader social and economic needs of rural communities. Many of the innovative initiatives developed under the Rural Development Strategy for Northern Ireland in 1991 have been of direct relevance to our neighbours in Central and Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union who have come to realise that agricultural, environmental and rural affairs must often be addressed together in order to sustain a more inclusive, viable and prosperous rural society.
